The work explores the traces that landscapes and the environment around us leave on us, using abstraction to investigate themes such as memory, perception, and belonging. Through the delicate balance between control and chance that the pouring of paint allows, I use visual abstraction as a way to open spaces for reflection. Each work begins with a landscape that has surrounded me and that holds personal meaning; however, through abstraction, perspective disappears. Familiar forms become disconcerting, evoking the way we interact with maps: from an aerial and distant view, we see the landscape in its entirety, but as we get closer we can lose our sense of perspective.
